Avenged Sevenfold are hard at work on their seventh studio album, which will serve as the follow-up to 2013's chart-topping Hail to the King and the debut of former Bad Religion stickman Brooks Wackerman. So far, the guys have been relatively quiet about their progress, but guitarist Zacky Vengeance has broken the silence with an update on the sound of the new material.

Offering some insight to their work, Vengeance told Kerrang!, "It’s pretty much completely aggro. It goes in all sorts of aggressive directions and melodic directions. It has a lot of metal elements that we grew up loving. And tons of melody. It’s hard to say. At this point the only word that would describe it is ‘aggro’."

The melodic leanings have always been a linchpin of the Avenged Sevenfold sound, exchanging guitar and vocal hooks that helped the band gain staggering popularity on their early ascent to metal stardom.

Wackerman served up his thoughts, simply adding, “We’re just focusing on writing right now and trying to put together a new record. That’s the focal point. There’s no set timescale, we just want to make sure we all feel confident with it. It is moving right along.”

Avenged Sevenfold revealed Wackerman as their new drummer in early November on Chris Jericho's podcast, Talk is Jericho. The band was mum on who would man the drum throne after dismissing Arin Ilejay who had been with them since 2011.

While fans rabidly wait for another album, which could be their third consecutive No.1 release, they were recently treated to some new music in the form of the "Jade Helm" score for the video game Call of Duty: Black Ops III. The game itself is certainly aggro, which means Avenged Sevenfold were the perfect band for the job.
