David O. Russell Is Heading to TV with Julianne Moore and Robert De Niro

Television is all about the limited series right now, and David O. Russell is cashing in on the trend.

The Joy filmmaker is developing a limited series according to Variety, and believe it or not, it isn’t starring long-time Russell staple Jennifer Lawrence. The trade reports Julianne Moore and Robert De Niro will star in the project, which is expected to be a serialized limited series. There’s no further details yet on the series, which is currently being shopped around networks and looking for buyers ahead of a formal pitch. Megan Ellison, who’s Annapurna Pictures produced Russell’s Joy and American Hustle, is on board as a producer along with Scott Lambert and Alexandra Milchan. While Russell executive produced SyFy’s Outer Space Astronauts, this will mark his first time directing on TV.

Over the past few years the limited series has risen to become a wonderful hybrid of film and television, allowing A-list actors and filmmakers opportunties to dabble in television with fewer commitments than working on a traditional series. It began with the first season of True Detective and has since bled onto every major network, from AMC’s The Night Manager to FX’s Fargo to ABC’s American Crime. And then there’s the Ryan Murphy triple threat of anthology shows, American Horror Story, American Crime Story, and his upcoming Feud. It’s a great way to bring Hollywood talent onto the small screen, and also doesn’t hurt actors’ chances at securing an Emmy nom – Moore already has an Emmy for HBO’s Game Change, but is De Niro looking to score one next year?
