Lionsgate recently announced that the final film in the Divergent series will skip theaters entirely and head straight to television, with additional plans to launch a spinoff series. Although the franchise has suffered diminishing returns at the box office, news of the Ascendant TV movie and (possible) spinoff was still a bit surprising to everyone — including Miles Teller, who seems somewhat hesitant about this whole television business.

Speaking with THR at the premiere of his new film War Dogs, Teller said he wasn’t the only one who was shocked to learn of Lionsgate’s change of plans for Ascendant. “It caught us all by surprise,” he said, referring to the cast of the Divergent series, which includes Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Ansel Elgort.

The studio is aiming to release Ascendant as a television movie that will wrap up the current story arc and introduce new characters, hopefully leading to a spinoff series set in the world of Divergent. Lionsgate has yet to confirm if any of the franchise’s stars will follow the series to TV — probably because they haven’t even talked to the cast about it. Here’s what Teller had to say when asked if he’s still reprising his role in Ascendant:

At this point, it’s a different set of circumstances. We’ll see. I honestly haven't talked to anybody.

He went on to insist that no one in the cast — himself included — has anything negative to say about working on the Divergent series, and that they “all had every intention of finishing” the franchise, but they also signed on a for a film with the understanding that it was going to be released in theaters, not on television.

Ascendant was intended to be the fourth and final installment in the Divergent series, and Lionsgate had already scrapped plans to split the film in two, since audiences have clearly grown tired of franchises dividing their final chapters. Following Allegiant’s underwhelming box office performance, the future of Ascendant became uncertain — even more uncertain now is whether Teller and his fellow cast members will stay committed to the franchise as it moves to television.
