New Playground For Special Needs Kids Opening

Coming up on June 18th at 10:30am, the AMBUCS Southwest Chapter and the city of Amarillo will hold a grand opening of the new inclusive/special needs playground at Amarillo’s Medical Center Park.

It is located between the Amarillo Botanical Gardens and the Don Harrington Discovery Center east of the park’s lake, accessed off Streit Drive.

AMBUCS raised over $900,000 to build a playground and splash pad for kids with special needs.  The city of Amarillo chipped in and built sidewalks and bathrooms compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act.  The park was turned over to the city for them to maintain.

The equipment is designed to be fun and was built with ramps for easy access.  There are multiple areas for kids with different levels of disability.

Funding for the project comes from United Supermarkets, the Mary E. Bivins Foundation, High Plains Christian Ministries, the Children’s Miracle Network, the Don & Sybil Harrington Foundation, the Brumley Foundation, ROCO Agape Charity, the Josephine Anderson Trust, the Kimble Foundation, the Gilliland Family Foundation, the David and Nona Payne Foundation, Allen Deputy, Pat Crawford, the Southwest Ambucs Herring Endowment and donations from special individuals and families.
