Boston-based indie band Pile have been steadily releasing albums since 2007, and are continuing that streak with the upcoming A Hairshirt of Purpose, due this March on Exploding in Sound. Today, they put out a new track, "Texas," which takes a different stylistic direction. The guitar work is unpredictable and twangy, the axes harmonizing to create a stranger sound. They let themselves get weird, but not at the expense of songwriting. That strangeness eventually fades, as the song becomes less of a twisting mystery and more a hyper-focused sonic assault. Here's to a cool new album.
