We happen to live in a time when technology rolls over on itself faster than we can keep up with it, and social media is no exception. If you have been around a computer in the last decade you know that social media is taking over. Different forms of social media have been born and some gone extinct, but one thing remains, people are hooked.

MYSPACE

I believe it all started with the 'chat room' and has grown into the beast we now know as facebook. I remember friendster came around and people started joining and talking about it here and there. Then it seemed that MySpace took over and dominated. I really don't know anyone who wasn't on facebook at one point or another. Anyone from bands to comedians to just the average joe used MySpace for something. Whether to keep up with old friends, promote their new album, share show dates of comedy clubs they would be in; MySpace was a great place to listen to some cool jams and chat with people.

Then it seemed like as fast is it came, it was gone and replaced by facebook. 250,000,000 people can't be wrong right? I mean, if you're not on facebook, then odds are you are under the age of 13 or live on a deserted island. Facebook is by far the largest and most powerful social media that has been introduced yet. Facebook has geared itself toward the average consumer and businesses alike. While surfing through facebook and liking different things, songs and places; facebook has figured out exactly what kind of advertising to put in front of you. It has figured out what bands, business and friends to suggest to you and most of all, it has figured out how to sell you an 'idea'.

GOOGLE+

Now, it looks like facebook might have a little competition. Google is throwing its hat into the ring with the new 'Google+' social media platform. Right now it is still in the beta/testing phase so if you want to sign up, you better find a friend who's already on it because it is invite only. Of course once it's ready to be pushed live and commercial, I'm sure that will change. I normally wouldn't take something like this seriously if it were by Yahoo or Bing, but this is Google! With the integration google already has in almost every aspect of the online world and our day to day lives with android phones, gmail, google search and all their other projects; this could prove to be the next thing Google does to smash the competition.

I'm on Google+ and so far it seems to be a pretty cool platform, of course still learning all the ins and outs. I think, like me, most of the world resists change and prefers to still to the familiar. So, that will be a hurdle that Google + will have to climb before it has a chance to surpass facebook, if it is able to at all. I think Google+ has a chance to become the next big thing, but I don't see facebook going anywhere for quite some time. Click here for more information on Google+.
