Hunger is a real thing here in the Texas Panhandle.  You would be amazed at how many people and families go hungry on a daily basis.    One in 7 people here in the Texas Panhandle are food insecure.  That's 77,000 people.   That's why this Saturday couldn't come at a better time.  Right now the High Plains Food Bank is in need of food donations. Twenty-four years ago the National Association of Letter Carriers started an event called Stamp Out Hunger to help out the hungry.  This Saturday they will continue that tradition and will collect food for the High Plains Food Bank.

It's actually simple to take part in Stamp Out Hunger Day.  All you have to do is put together a  bag of non-perishable food items, and then place them by your mailbox on Saturday morning and your letter carrier will pick it up.  The drive is going on from 8am - 12n.  You can also donate at the United at 45th and Bell as well as the Amigo's at I-40 and Grand.

Here is a list of non-perishable food items most needed at the High Plains Food Bank at the moment:

Canned Vegetables
Canned Fruit
Canned meats
Bagged rice
Bagged beans

The following cities will be participating in Stamp Out Hunger: Amarillo, Canyon, Dimmitt, Dumas, Hereford, Shamrock, and Tulia, TX.

Stamp Out Hunger is one of the largest single-day food drives that goes on nation wide.

Last year our local letter carriers brought in over 18,000 pounds of food.
