Cinco de Mayo is just around the corner so that means all kinds of celebrations are happening.  Whether you are Mexican or not, it is fun to join in the festivities.  And what is better than celebrating with a nice cold Michelada!  Here are 7 recipes for the perfect Cinco de Mayo Michelada.

I'm sure you've heard of the famous Michelada.  It is often described as MexicanBloody Mary.  Of course, it is made with beer instead of vodka.  A Michelada is made with beer, lime juice and tomato juice or clamato and you can customize it however you'd like.

1. Classic Michelada

This is the recipe I've seen the most.  Here are the ingredients you need:

  • lime wedges, for garnish
  • celery salt or plain salt, for garnish
  • 1 6oz can tomato juice
  • 2 limes, juiced (about 1/3 cup juice)
  • 1/4 teaspoon celery salt
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 -1/2 teaspoon Tabasco or preferred hot sauce
  • 2 12oz bottles or cans of beer (Modelo is ideal)
  • several handfuls of ice cubes

2. Spicy Michelada

If you like a little spice, this is the perfect Michelada for you.  Here's what you need:

Ingredients:
2 teaspoons honey, spread into a thin layer on a plate
1/4 cup kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
2 limes, juiced (plus extra lime wedges to garnish)
2 cups light Mexican beer
2 1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons hot sauce (preferably a more vinegar based hot sauce such as Tabasco)
1 teaspoon low sodium soy sauce
1/2 jalapeno, seeded and diced (optional)
freshly cracked black pepper

3.  Macheesmo Michelada

This is a lighter recipe that uses pickle juice.  Here's what you need:

Ingredients

  • 2 light lager beers
  • 1 cup clamato juice
  • 2 teaspoons pickle juice
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce
  • 1/2 lime, juice only
  • Michelada Salt:
  • 2 tablespoons kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon celery salt

4. Michelada Minus the Heat

I am a total wuss when it comes to spicy and hot, so this would be perfect for me.  It's kind of more like a Chelada, lol.  Here's what you need:

1/4 cup ice
Mexican beer (recommend: Dos XX or Tecate)
¼ cup fresh lime juice
Sal Limón or coarse salt

5. Dark Michelada

If you love dark beer, this is perfect for you!  Get this stuff and get ready:

2 Limes

Coarse sea salt (for glass rim)

3/4 Cup chilled tomato juice

1 Teaspoon soy sauce

1 Teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1 Teaspoon chipotle hot sauce (or Tabasco)

4 Bottles dark Mexican beer

6. The Seaside Michelada

If you love the sea flavor to food, you'll love this!  Here's what you need:

  • 1 Coronita beer, 7 ounces
  • 1/2 lemon juiced
  • 2-3 Key limes, juiced and wedges for garnish
  • dashes of hot sauce, Tamazalula, Cholula, or your choice
  • Sliver of fresh jalapeno to float in the drink
  • dash of Worchestershire
  • dash of soy sauce
  • Phillips seafood seasoning to rim glass
  • 4 ounces Clamato juice

7. Healthy Michelada

I know there are so many health cautious people, but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying a nice cold Michelada.  Here is what you need for this healthy version:

1 can or bottle of beer (non-dark beers are best)
1/2 tbsp Bragg Liquid Aminos (or soy sauce)
1 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
Juice of 1/2 lemon
Juice of 1 small lime
A few dashes of Tabasco Sauce
1/2 tsp. Garlic Pepper
