Not that anyone is surprised.

Canyon is home to West Texas A&M University, a small D2 school with about 10,000 students. The school, known as West Texas State Normal College at the time, was founded in Canyon in 1909. Back then, Canyon only had 1,400 people.

Now, Canyon is home to over 13,000 people, making it a pretty big small town. However, the community is still tight-knit and holds on to the traditions that built Canyon so long ago.

Because of the town's dedication to those traditions, Canyon has remained extremely safe over the years. That's how it landed on the list of the Safest College Towns in America 2016. SafeWise.com, a site for home security and safety advice, put together the list based on FBI crime statistics.

Canyon ranked #5 out of 30.

The crime rate index in Canyon is 34. To give you some reference, the national average is 100 and a lower index is considered better.

WTAMU is also dedicated to the safety of all its students. The Campus Safety and Security division maintains a high level of safety services for students, faculty, and staff.

The #1 safest college town in the nation is Winona, Minnesota, home to Winona State University.

No other Texas towns were listed.
