Groot has proven wildly popular in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, thanks in no small part to the introduction of Baby Groot, and even though Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 doesn’t hit theaters for another four months, he’s already become everyone’s favorite character. And while such intensely beloved characters often work better in slightly smaller doses within an ensemble (like the Guardians movies), Vin Diesel, the number one source for breaking Vin Diesel news, seems to think a solo Groot spinoff is “inevitable.”

In addition to leading action franchises and voicing Groot, Vin Diesel is known for a few things, including his ability to sort of will his desires into existence — like a third xXx movie, or bringing in a new director for The Fate of the Furious. Last December, Diesel told his fans that Guardians director James Gunn is interested in a possible Rocket Raccoon and Groot spinoff, which could happen after Avengers: Infinity War. And now Diesel is at it again, this time dropping Rocket from the equation in an interview with MTV News:

In the interview, Diesel discusses the possibility of a Groot solo movie and, once again, takes it upon himself to speak for James Gunn’s interests:

It’s something that James Gunn has talked about, and something that I know that he would love to do. Sure, I think it could be very interesting. I think it’s inevitable, I think, you know, that character’s so enigmatic. He was already one of the most unique characters in the Marvel Universe, and I think what Marvel has done, primarily what James Gunn has done to realize that character has exceeded beyond anyone’s expectations.

Could a Groot solo movie happen? I mean, sure, anything is possible, especially with such a beloved character — though it seems like a smarter approach would be to give Groot and a few other MCU favorites their own series of shorts that could play before new Marvel films, Pixar-style.

But just because Diesel wants it to happen, doesn’t mean that it will, or even that it should. Hey, it’s understandable: He’s voicing one of the most crazy-popular characters in the MCU, and he’s already the star of a couple of successful franchises, so the math adds up — at least in Diesel’s mind.

For his part, Gunn hasn’t exactly said anything about either a Rocket and Groot spinoff or a Groot solo movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5.
