Zakk Wylde is one of the world’s biggest Black Sabbath fans. Hell, he even started Zakk Sabbath so he could tour playing the heavy metal architects’ material. The guitar legend is now gonna take his Sabbath fandom one step further — re-recording the band’s debut album to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

In the spirit of the original album, Zakk Sabbath will cover Black Sabbath completely in analogue, direct to two-inch tape. The band will also track the entire record in the space of 24 hours, just like Sabbath did five decades ago.

“Vertigo Records issued the debut album by Black Sabbath on Friday, February 13, 1970, and the world was never the same,” Zakk Sabbath write. “Legendarily recorded in a single day in October 1969, the earthmoving self-titled set closed the book on hippie optimism with its dark magic and ushered in a brand new genre, setting the metal template for decades to come.”

“Exactly 50 years to the date later, Zakk Sabbath will celebrate the first chapter in the Sabbath catalog with a reverently rendered tribute, simply titled Vertigo. Our aim is to faithfully re-record the album in the spirit of the original recordings: live in a fully analogue studio, direct to two inch tape, in a single 24 hour period. A film crew will document the process, culminating in a single album and DVD release limited to just 500 copies and delivered to purchasers on February 13, 2020.”

Unfortunately, all 500 pre-orders have already been sold, but we’re sure the Internet will make Vertigo extremely available.

Zakk Sabbath will tour North America this August with special guest Don Jamieson. Click here for the full list of dates.
